Introduction to New Thought
OUR HISTORY
Unity’s founders Charles and Myrtle Fillmore became a devoted students of philosophy and religion. They were greatly influenced by New Thought pioneers such as Phineas Parkhurst Quinby, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Emma Curtis Hopkins, and Thomas Troward. Their emphasis was on the power of positive thinking and spiritual principles to improve one's life
In1889, Charles left his business to focus entirely on publishing a new periodical, Modern Thought. In 1890 they organized a prayer group that would later be called "Silent Unity®" and in the following year, the Fillmore's Unity magazine was first published.
Dr. H. Emilie Cady published a series titled Lessons in Truth in the new magazine. This material was later compiled and published in a book by the same name, which served as a seminal work of the Unity movement.
Although the Fillmores had no intention of making Unity into a denomination, their students wanted a more organized group. Charles and Myrtle were among the first ordained Unity ministers in 1906.
Unity began a formal program for training ministers in 1931. Unity World Headquarters is located at Unity Village, Missouri. Click on the link to visit Unity World Headquarters. https://www.unity.org which also publishes the daily devotional magazine Daily Word®.
